San Diego Community College District to Raise Funds for Free Tuition Program

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Community College District will hold its inaugural Giving Day fundraising event Tuesday to support its tuition- subsidizing San Diego Promise program.

The all-day event, dubbed “Keeping the Promise,” aims to support tuition-free education for more than 3,100 first-time, full-time college students during the 2019-20 academic year. The program builds on Assembly Bill 19, which provides state funding to cover one year of tuition at community colleges across California.

The San Diego Promise covers all tuition and fees for two years for first-time, full-time students as well as book grants, counseling and educational support. The district first launched the program in 2016 with a 186- student cohort, which has expanded each year since.
