When community colleges in Florida — including the former Manatee Community College — began offering four-year degrees in a relatively small number of fields, the Herald-Tribune Editorial Board was among those who had questions.

Would offering baccalaureate degrees divert the colleges’ attention from their core missions, providing two-year associates degrees and delivering education directly linked to workplace demands? Would the ability to provide four-year degrees lead to unproductive competition between community-based colleges and universities?
