Enrollment at Tidewater Community College for the semester that began a few weeks ago is down 8.1% from last fall.
As of last week, the college had enrolled the equivalent of 10,961 full-time students, nearly a thousand under fall 2018. The figure is a calculation used for college funding. The total number of actual students is down 1,467, or 7.5%.
Thomas Nelson Community College, with its main campus in Hampton, saw its estimated enrollment drop 7.7%, from the equivalent of 4,006 full-time students in fall 2018 to 3,698 as of Sept. 25. That’s left the college with a decreasing budget, since state funding is mostly tied to student enrollment. TNCC laid off its housekeeping staff at its Hampton campus in the spring and is preparing for layoffs prompted by budget issues this fall.
